Sinopsis
Lionel, a reserved man, lives in a modes appartment with his daughter, Josephine. The live a reasonable happy life, based on trust and mutual affection. However, over time, some sings that things have to change start to appear. There is balance between and closeness between the affection Josephine and Lionel have. He is about to retire, with his more tnat fifty years, from his job as a train driver. While she, being more thant twenty, studies anthropology and works in a music stablishmen. They live in an appartment complex at the parisian borders, where Noé is, a friend of the family who it attracted to Josephine but also wants to leave, while Gabrielle secretly wants Lionel. These lives that cross and divide, like the train tracks, are Claire Denis' matter to mold a world and characters in which daily habits and differences are displayed without empahsis, whitout condemning them or embellish, whitout taking away their inscription (social, political or cultural) without confining them to a ghetto, building an idea of community and family that comes from humanism and warmth that currently cannot be traced in contemporary cinema. Almost undetectable and sensorial, 35 Shots of Rum is one of those Denis movies that reinstate not only the faith in cinema, but also, in mankind

Claire Denis
Paris, 1946-48. Director and screenwriter. Denis studied economy, but abandoned the degree soon after. She then studied at IDHEC, the french school of film. After graduating, she worked as the asistan of Jacques Rivette, Costa-Gravas, Jim Jarmusch, and Wim Wenders. Since 2002, Denis is profesor at The Europeand Grad School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. Her debut feature film was with Chocolat (1988). A semi-autobiographical meditation about african colonialism, which was greatly acclaimed. With her movies, such as US Go Home (1994), Nénette et Boni (1996), Beau travail (1999), Trouble Every Day (2001) and Vendredi soir (2002), she established her reputation as a filmmaker that has been able to "concile the french cinema lyricism with the impulse to capt the, ever so often, rigid face of the contemporary France."
